We now have some trial access to MODIS chlorophyll ocean color/clarity data so we will be making some charts from the new data and placing them up on the website on a daily basis (weather permitting of course) to see if they helpful or not. In fact a few are already up on the Florida side and a couple on the North East side however it has been very cloudy on the North East side. We will update them, about once per day for now however the update schedule is solely dependent on the quality of the MODIS images & data for that day that we receive. In other words, if the data is clear of clouds, defects or poor camera angle, we will make some charts and post them. Many of the MODIS images are not usable.

We speculate that for now, the Chlorophyll charts will be posted anytime between 3 pm and midnight. The new charts will be mixed in with the regular SST charts for now so they will not be outwardly identifiable from a index point of view. To find them at this time you will have to use the console to "flip" back in time a bit. When flipping through the standard SST charts the new chlorophyll ocean color charts will be visually easy to identify due to their very different look and colors. This will be the only way to find them until we re-build the chart control console to reflect the new products if we decide to continue offering them.

The charts themselves are very easy to read and understand. There is a color bar on each chart section which is self explanatory. You don't have to know what the numbers on the charts or the color bar stand for except keep in mind that the "smaller" the numeric values you see on the chart or pale blue to very deep dark blue colors means that the less chlorophyll and particulates are present and the clearer the water will be.

The higher the numeric value represented by bright lime-green yellow orange colors denotes the presence of more chlorophyll and particulates and in turn represents more cloudy and less clear water. You will note that most of the more cloudy water shown as bright lime-greens yellows and oranges will naturally be near the shoreline.

Honestly, some offshore folks say they love chlorophyll charts while others don't see any real benefit from them however since we can get the data for now, we will provide you with it when we get good shots so lets just see how it goes. We are also working on getting very high resolution "true color" images and a wider spread of chlorophyll data from other sources during the mean time.

Thank You
Fred
